HUD housing at the Westward Ho is for low income senior citizens and mobility handicapped individuals needing the features of an accessible unit.

In the 1930s through the 1960s, this plush hotel was known for its elegance, fine cuisine and entertainment, and as a spot for the rich and famous to relax.

From the original 450- plus rooms, renovation has created 290 studios and one-bedrooms. Each unit has individual air conditioning, bathroom and kitchen.

Of the current 320 residents, the majority are single senior citizens.

The Hotel Westward Ho opened its doors in 1929. Since then there have been several owners, many renovations, and many changes of personality. In 1980 plans were made to raze the hotel. But a group of business people saved the building from destruction. Westward Ho Associates made application to HUD for federal subsidization to convert the hotel into housing for the elderly and handicapped. After approval, the first tenants took up residence in March 1981.
