Wallace and Ladmo

KIDS' SHOW LEAVES A LADMO BAG FULL OF MEMORIES

Excerpt from THE PHOENIX GAZETTE, December 28, 1989

Wallace always propelled me into laughter with pratfalls off ladders or the diving board at the pool of the old Westward Ho Hotel, next to the old KPHO studios on north First Avenue. Chevy Chase, eat your heart out.

When Wallace, Ladmo and Gerald leave the Channel 5 airwaves after 35-plus years, they'll leave us with a lot of memories.

Ah, and what memories.

* A young Wallace Sneed (Bill Thompson) trying to help his mentor, Gold Dust Charlie (Ken Kennedy). Wallace had a few strings of hair that sometimes hung below his beanie, which was complete with a propeller on top.

* When the show was given the title, ''It's Wallace?'' (circa 1960), Wallace and his Stan Laurel-ish friend (Lad Kwiatkowski) often went on location.

There was the time when they went to ASU's football practice, where they were hassled by then-coach Frank Kush. Ladmo, an athlete in real life (as was Wallace) often had passes bounce off his helmetless head.

Or the times when they went to the old Madison Square Garden (on Seventh Avenue south of Van Buren Street). Wallace would become involved in a boxing match, or would be joined by Ladmo for tag-team wrestling against the likes of Don ''Bulldog'' Kent, Tito Montez or ''The Mad Mongol.'' Hulk Hogan should be grateful to these guys.

Papago Park was where the Civil War epic, ''To Heck and Back,'' was filmed, as were the continuing cliffhanger serials that featured the boys against the appropriately named ''Nasty Brothers.''
