Town & Country magazine has an interesting article on
the Sonoran Desert, and Terry DeWald, a Valley native and one-time pro
athlete who is a successful collector and dealer of Indian crafts,
figures prominently in the piece.
We remember Terry's dad, Bud DeWald, as a fine journalist and a
man of immense courage. When the tower was erected atop the Westward Ho
Hotel, in the late '40s, he climbed unassisted to the top. (Republic
columnist Don Dedera, who later would do two reporting tours in
Vietnam, recalls trying the same climb and retiring in abject terror).
At the tower's dizzying top, DeWald took a photo looking straight down.
Just the memory of that picture still gives some folks vertigo.
